About Wooden Lanterns & Rattan Candle Lanterns
Wooden Lanterns
A wooden lantern throws light through cut openings rather than a glass panel, so the pattern lands on the surrounding wall and floor. That makes it a light source and a decorative object at once, which a plain glass lantern is not.
Rattan and Bamboo Lanterns
Woven rattan and bamboo lanterns diffuse light through the weave, giving a softer and more even glow than cut wood. They are light enough to hang from a hook. Use an LED candle in any woven lantern with the flame close to the fibre.
Indoor Lantern Decor
Grouped lanterns work better than a single one, in odd numbers at different heights on a hearth, a sideboard or the floor beside a sofa. Candles to fit are in natural candles.
Candles and Safety
Never leave a real flame unattended in a wood or fibre lantern, and keep the candle well below the top of the opening so heat escapes. For hanging lanterns and anything with a woven interior, LED is the sensible choice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you use real candles in a rattan lantern?
Only with care, and never unattended. Woven fibre is combustible, so the flame must sit well clear of the sides and below the opening. For hanging or fully enclosed woven lanterns, use an LED candle.
What size candle fits?
Most take a standard pillar candle; the product page gives the interior dimensions. Choose a candle that leaves clear space above it so heat escapes rather than building up against the top.
Can these lanterns go outside?
On a covered porch or balcony, yes. In the open they should not stay out, since rain and damp swell wood and stain woven fibre. Bring them in when the weather turns.
How do you clean a wooden or woven lantern?
Dust with a soft brush, getting into the cut openings or weave. A barely damp cloth for the frame. Do not soak, and dry it fully before putting a candle back in.
Do they come with candles?
No, lanterns are sold on their own so you can choose the candle type and whether to use a real flame or LED.
