About Sculptural & Decorative Candles - Beeswax and Soy

Sculptural Candles

Sculptural candles are cast in a mould rather than dipped, so the shape holds as the candle burns down. They read as an object on a shelf when unlit, which is most of the time. Burn them on a plate or holder, since the wax pools differently in a moulded form than in a straight pillar.

Decorative Candles for a Table

Decorative candles set the light level for a table without a fitting overhead. Group odd numbers at different heights and keep them out of a draught so they burn evenly. Wooden and stone holders are covered in the wooden candle holders guide.

Coconut Shell Candles

A coconut shell candle uses the polished half-shell as the vessel. The shell is a by-product of the food trade, so nothing is grown for it. Once the wax is gone the shell washes out and works as a small dish.

Hand Poured Beeswax and Soy

Pure beeswax burns slowly with a faint honey smell of its own and needs no added fragrance. Soy burns cooler and takes scent better. Both are plant or insect derived rather than petroleum based, which is the practical difference from paraffin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are beeswax candles better than soy?

They do different jobs. Beeswax burns longer and hotter with a natural honey scent and needs no fragrance added. Soy burns cooler and holds added scent better. Neither is petroleum based, which is the main difference from paraffin.

Why does my candle tunnel down the middle?

The first burn was too short. A candle needs to burn until the melt pool reaches the full width of the container, usually two to three hours, or it sets a narrower memory ring that it keeps to every time after.

How do you stop a candle smoking?

Trim the wick to about 5 mm before every burn. A long wick draws up more wax than it can burn cleanly, and the excess leaves as soot. Keep the candle out of draughts as well, since a flickering flame smokes.

Can you reuse a coconut shell candle?

Yes. Once the wax has burned down, wash the shell in warm soapy water to lift the residue. It works as a small dish for jewellery or spices afterwards.

Are these candles unscented?

The beeswax candles carry only the faint natural scent of the wax itself. Scented options use natural fragrance rather than synthetic. Check the individual product page, which lists the scent if there is one.
