Organic Modern Furniture: Solid Wood, Teak Root and Rattan Tables
Coffee tables, side tables and dining tables where the material keeps its own shape instead of being sanded into a rectangle.
Organic modern furniture keeps clean modern lines but lets the material show what it is. A live edge stays live. A teak root keeps the grain it grew with. A rattan weave stays visibly woven. The restraint is in the room around the piece, not in the piece itself.
This page covers 39 tables and nightstands in solid wood, teak root, rattan, travertine and glass. Below the range there are notes on choosing between a round and a rectangular table, what live edge and teak root actually mean when you are buying, and how these pieces behave over years rather than months.
No two are identical
Teak root and live edge pieces are cut from individual sections of timber. Grain, colour and outline differ from the photograph.
Solid, not veneered board
The wood tables here are solid timber or solid teak root. What you see on the edge is the same material as the top.
Shapes that suit small rooms
A high proportion of the range is round. Round tables move better through tight living rooms and have no corner to walk into.

What makes furniture organic modern rather than rustic
The difference is restraint. Rustic furniture leans into age: distressing, heavy joinery, dark stain, visible tool marks added on purpose. Organic modern keeps the natural form of the material but finishes it cleanly and puts it in a plain room.
So a live edge slab on a chunky carved base is rustic. The same slab on a slim, quiet base is organic modern. The wood is doing the talking either way, but in one case the frame joins in and in the other it gets out of the way.
That is also why the palette stays narrow. Natural timber tones, black, off-white and stone. Colour comes from textiles and plants, not from the furniture.
Choosing an organic modern coffee table
Height first. A coffee table should sit within about 5 cm of your sofa seat height. Too low and you reach down awkwardly, too high and it dominates the room visually.
Then length. Aim for roughly two thirds the length of the sofa, and leave 40 to 45 cm between the table edge and the sofa so people can get past without turning sideways.
Round or rectangular is mostly about traffic. A round table suits a room where people walk around the seating, and it is the safer choice with small children. A rectangular one suits a long sofa and a room you move through rather than around. Where the top is a natural slab or a teak root, the outline will be irregular, so treat the listed dimensions as the widest points.
What teak root and live edge actually mean
Teak root furniture is made from the root and stump left after a teak tree is felled, which would otherwise be waste. It is dense, heavy and full of irregular grain. Because each root is different, every piece has a different outline and a different pattern, and no photograph can be more than an example.
Live edge means one or more edges of the board keep the natural outline of the tree rather than being cut straight. It is not a finish applied afterwards. If a listing shows a perfectly repeated wavy edge across several units, that is a mould, not a live edge.
Both carry a practical consequence worth knowing before ordering. Weight is high, tolerances are loose, and small cracks and filled knots are normal rather than faults. If you need two matching pieces, choose from the machined wood tables instead.
How these pieces age
Solid wood moves with humidity. Small seasonal gaps and hairline checks in the end grain are the material behaving normally, not a defect. Keep pieces away from a radiator directly below and out of long direct sun, both of which dry timber faster than it can adjust.
Use coasters. Untreated and oiled tops mark from hot mugs and from water left standing, and while a mark can usually be sanded and re-oiled out, it is easier not to make it.
Rattan tables need the opposite care from wood: keep them dry rather than keep them from drying. Brush the weave rather than wiping it, and glue any lifted strand down early.
Questions people ask
What is organic modern furniture?
It combines clean modern lines with materials left close to their natural form. Live edges stay live, teak root keeps its grown shape, rattan stays visibly woven. The restraint sits in the surrounding room and in the simple bases and frames, rather than in the material itself.
How is organic modern different from rustic furniture?
Rustic leans into age with distressing, heavy joinery and dark stain. Organic modern keeps the natural shape of the material but finishes it cleanly and pairs it with a plain base and a narrow colour palette. The same live edge slab reads as rustic on a carved base and organic modern on a slim one.
What size coffee table should I buy?
Match the height to within about 5 cm of your sofa seat height, and aim for a length around two thirds of the sofa. Leave 40 to 45 cm between the table and the sofa so people can walk past. Where the top is a natural slab or teak root, the listed dimensions are the widest points of an irregular outline.
What is teak root furniture?
It is made from the root and stump left behind after a teak tree is felled, material that would otherwise be discarded. It is dense, heavy and irregularly grained. Every piece has a different outline and pattern, so product photographs show one example rather than the exact item you receive.
Will the piece I receive look exactly like the photograph?
Not exactly, for the teak root and live edge pieces. Those are cut from individual sections of timber, so grain, colour and outline vary. Small cracks and filled knots are normal. The machined solid wood tables are consistent between units, so choose from those if you need two pieces to match.
How do I care for a solid wood table?
Use coasters, since untreated and oiled tops mark from hot mugs and standing water. Keep the table out of long direct sunlight and away from a radiator directly beneath it. Seasonal hairline checks in the end grain are the wood responding to humidity and are not a fault.
